The issue of school reform, transformation, or discontinuous
change has been a continuing dominant element in thinking
about the role of ICT in schools. An assumption underlying
this presentation is that ICT has not been, at least in
the U.S. situation, a generally significant factor in
needed school reform. The presentation will begin with
a brief response to the question: What do schools need
to do better than they are generally doing at present?
The experience with ICT in schools over the past two decades
indicates that school reform is not a natural consequence
of the introduction of ICT to schools. Discontinuous rather
than incremental or evolutionary change requires deliberate
action. The focus of the presentation will be on providing
a perspective on the challenges that confront those who
see school reform as a social imperative. |
